  1. Back in September, 1983 -- before they invented such things as middle-aged disgruntlement, sallow complexions, iPhones, "American Idol", and insufferable internet acronyms such as "LOL" and "BFF" -- Patti came to visit us in Albertson, New York for a few days. My brother and I had procured tickets to see Johnny Winter at a fairly well-known local club called My Father's Place in Roslyn. Unfortunately, It's not there any longer.

I think Patti was pleased that we were going to see Johnny, since, at the time, she had made it known that she was a blues fan. That night, I remember Johnny blazing away on his guitar, literally three feet away from us, while Patti was smiling and dancing away with a glass of Hennessy cognac in her hand, and having a really good time. It was a great show. The next day, which was sort of cloudy and gray, I remember Patti getting up and going for an endless jog around and around our block. I was pretty impressed, because, at the time, I honestly couldn't have done even one lap around my block without throwing up, and I was only 20 years old at the time.

Patti's visit in September, 1983 has been an enduring memory for me all these years. Often, still, when I listen to Johnny Winter, I think of her, and the show we saw back then. I am so sorry for the Haugh and Trudell families, and for the sadness you must be feeling. Please accept my very sincere condolences.
